Will you help with Lui's amputation surgery?

LUI, aka MOOMOO, aka REX, gorgeous four-year-old 10 lbs French Lop, was surrendered to BWF by his previous parents without disclosing his medical condition.  A moment post arriving at BWF, we noticed that Lui was' walking kind of funny.' Lui's recheck radiographs showed severe arthritis in his right hip and stifle, and he exhibited a decreased range of motion in both joints. He also was very lame on that right hind (non-weight bearing), so the vet decided to try him on some Metacam to see if it would help him. Upon recheck, he seemed to be getting along fine and was using the leg some, but it looked like it was still bothering him.  He was touching it down some, but then holding it out and shaking it like it was painful.  Our vet conferred with another specialist regarding routine amputation vs. amputation with FHO vs. disarticulating at the hip.  Recommended amputation at 1/3 femur just above the cerclage wires.   Lui had to undergo surgery, and we set a date for 9/2/2020.

During the short time at BWF, Lui made friends with the residents of Bunny Chateau.  They LOVED him right away. This gentle giant was 10 lbs. of pure love and goodness. He took tiny little Coco (who's got no teeth and has been on Critical Care only for two years!) under his belt and showered him with kisses, cleaned his leftovers of Critical Care, and groomed him when no one else bothered. Lolita Rose was smitten and fell in love immediately with Lui. Lover Jr. discovered that Lui had an abundance of love for all. Everyone got along. Everyone became more loving, even the rebellious Venus. She could have Lover Jr. all for herself and did not mind Lolita Rose any longer.  This giant baby brought love, harmony, and peace to this sweet rabbit family, who all ended up as BC residents due to their unique medical needs.

He has been hospitalized for three days now, and Lolita has been depressed.  She does not understand that her big boyfriend is coming back.  His amputation surgery went well, but it took much longer than anticipated, hence the $2,500 bill. (attached) which makes our monthly bill almost $9,000. Our vet wrote to us: "He was very muscular, especially for not using that leg for a while, and the muscles were all adhered to the bone. Then the incision was large, and the skin very thin, so it took a long time to close. The bone was also very unhealthy and brittle, so I had to smooth it after the cut very carefully. Just a combination of issues."

Lui is leaving the hospital today, but our vet bill remains.  If we are to continue bringing more cases like Lui, we need help.

8 Rabbits Rescued from the Lab Need Foster Homes TODAY!

The 4th of July...

THE 4TH OF JULY >>> A time when humans celebrate... and a time that domestic and wild animals DREAD! Birds, squirrels, and other wildlife suffer due to fireworks; mothers abandoning nests out of panic, and their babies die. Domestic animals panic and escape the safety of homes if not kept indoors with all escapes secured. Bunnies are terrified of loud noises. Fireworks of any kind can cause rabbits to panic, thump, and dart suddenly in distress - often causing injury to themselves. Please help animals through the nightmare of July 4th:

>>Keep your buns INDOORS! Domestic bunnies should ALWAYS live indoors with you, but it is especially vital that they remain inside that safe environment on the days before, during, and after July 4th. Please forgo any supervised outings, as the residential setting-off of fireworks is unpredictable, and debris from fireworks can be found in your yards and parks.

>>Microchip your bunnies/cats/dogs and confirm that the microchip is registered with current information and identification. Cats and Dogs - current ID should be worn at all times.

>>Play music at a sensible level to cushion sudden explosive noises. The TV or stereo left on will help distract them from the outside noise.

>>Keep all doors and windows closed. Even if your pets have never panicked before, there is always a first time. It's not worth the risk, as once they are out - tragedy awaits.

>>Provide extra hide-y boxes/tunnels or their favorite form of hiding shelter within their living spaces. This will give them a greater sense of security.

>>Offer your animals new chew toys or healthy treat to keep them occupied and entertained.

>>Keep them cool! JULY 4TH occurs during one of the hottest Summer months, so provide cooling with fans, AC, and frozen water bottles.

>>Just a reminder for those able to stay in on July 4th... Animals are like children, and rely on a human parent for true security.

Midnight Needs Your Help!

Midnight was dumped at a high-kill shelter on June 19. Had we known how bad her wounds were, we would have rescued her sooner, but we only got to know yesterday and our volunteer rushed her to the vet right away.

Please help us save Midnight. She deserves to live. We are not privy of what caused such severe wounds and abcessation, but we are willing to do whatever it takes to give her a 2nd chance at life.

We have saved THIRTY bunnies from the shelter this month, and have treated over 50 at our vet. None of that would have happened without your immense support.

These are photos of Midnight, 2lb baby lionhead, taken yesterday 6/29 by Northwood Animal Hospital. (Last one is just the piece of necrotic skin Dr. Roberts pulled off of her left side.). She thinks the wounds down her side will heal okay, but the large wound on her back needs to be debrided and closed. Estimate attached. They have started her on antibiotics and pain meds, and so far she's doing well, ea

ting fine. Right now they have her on the schedule for surgery on Wednesday. We'll keep you posted.

Update on Lucky Blue!

We are home with Lucky Blue. He is curious, sweet, and voraciously hungry. He loves pellets and greens, carrot tops and chard not so much the dandelions. He is very mobile and spry despite his impairments, exploring and leaping to higher places than we were comfortable with given his recent surgeries, so we coaxed him down with more food. :) He loves gentle head pets on the right side of his head. His poops are normal size. He is exceedingly small, so we are going to see about giving him all the hay, greens, water, and pellets he wants and see how he responds. :) Our goal is healing, building strength, and loving on him all the time to make sure he understands he matters and feels loved. ❤️ Lucky Blue you are in our house now where life will be an adventure. Welcome to the beginning of your new life!

Lucky Blue is doing very well. He is eating, moving around, and very, very social. Once he heals, he needs a very attentive owner who can hang out with him all the time. He cues on our (human) movements and wants to be right there with us. He gets very attached to humans that pay attention to him. He listens to us and is responsive to corrections. He also seems attention starved and restless like he needs a free roam space to explore. He is a jumper whenever he gets a chance to explore and leap, he does. The adopters will need to consider the leaping aspect and his limitations when planning for his living space. He will make someone an amazing companion if they give him the time and attention.

Lucky Blue is doing great! He is adjusting to our routine, people, food, environment, and his new physical condition. I have kept him on the Tramadol and Gabapentin for the time being as he seems to be doing so well while he is on it. He is very alert, smart, pays attention to what is going on around him and super sweet. He behaves like a puppy. He loves to be pet on the head and sits right next to you. He also listens to limits which is remarkably interesting to observe him take in when we say he cannot do something. He is eating very well and putting on some weight. I did buy alfalfa pellets and hay which we are mixing with the Timothy hay. He drinks a great deal of water and loves the greens. It is nice to see him have a healthy appetite.
