The Easter Bunny was introduced to the United States by the German settlers who arrived in the Pennsylvania Dutch country during the 18th century. The arrival of the Osterhase was considered one of "childhood's greatest pleasures", similar to the arrival of Kris Kringle on Christmas Eve. In legend, the creature brings baskets filled with colored eggs, candy and sometimes also toys to the homes of children, and as such shows similarities to Father Christmas, as they both bring gifts to children and on the night before their respective holiday. According to the legend, only good children received gifts of colored eggs in the nests that they made in their caps and bonnets before Easter.

In reality, however, each year thousands of baby rabbits, chicks, and ducks are purchased as Easter gifts to good children ONLY to be abandoned or left at shelters in the days, weeks and months that follow Easter by irresponsible parents. Bunny World Foundation strongly urges parents not to buy their children live "Easter bunnies" unless they are willing to make a 10-year commitment to properly care for the animals. Why not get a chocolate bunny instead and consider helping BWF put an end to cruelty to and abuse of animals by sending a special contribution today?
